NIKOLAI AARRE

Amsterdam flat, 2024

Renovation and interior of a flat located in the centre of Amsterdam. The brief was to make full use of the flat’s L-shaped layout and natural light coming from three different sides.

When entering you are drawn to the light at the end of the hallway, floating in from two sides. The living room extends to the study, that can be closed off using big ceiling height sliding doors. These visually heighten the space. As with their counterpart in the bedroom, the doors are hidden behind the carpentry and therefore disappear completely when open. By making the openings increasingly narrow (hallway - bedroom, side hallway - loo, bathroom) a clear hierarchy of space is established.

The bathroom and utility room are wrapped in bookcases, giving the impression of a freestanding piece of furniture that invites you to circle around.

Round shapes are repeated throughout the flat, from the steel flush handles and ventilation holes to the windows, lamps and curved shape of the kitchen. This gives a nautical feeling which fits well with the layout and canal view.
